Met Éireann has issued Status Yellow rain warnings for seven counties, with the first taking effect at 6:00p.m tomorrow, Wednesday, October 14.
The warning covering Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo runs from 6:00p.m on Wednesday until 6:00a.m on Thursday. A separate rain warning applies to Clare and Kerry from midnight to midday on Thursday. Spells of heavy rain are expected while both warnings are in force.
The forecasters have flagged three potential impacts: difficult travelling conditions, localised flooding and poor visibility. Anyone moving livestock, feed or machinery across the west and northwest on Wednesday night and Thursday morning should plan around that window rather than through it.
What does the wind warning change?
Wind comes first. Met Éireann has also issued a Status Yellow wind warning for Donegal, Galway and Mayo, running from 6:00a.m to 6:00p.m on Wednesday — so it expires before the rain warning begins.
South-westerly winds will be very strong at times, especially along the coasts, the forecaster said. The listed impacts read like a farm checklist:
- Debris and loose objects displaced
- Difficult driving and cycling conditions
- Some fallen trees and branches
- Large coastal waves combined with moderate surge, which may lead to wave overtopping in exposed coastal areas
For coastal holdings in the three named counties, the practical reading is straightforward. Secure anything the wind can move — sheeting, plastic, lighter equipment — before Wednesday morning. Give trees along laneways and yard edges a wide berth once the winds pick up.
The wider week
Beyond the warnings, the week looks mixed. Spells of rain and showers are expected, but Met Éireann also anticipates some drier periods. It will be breezy or windy at times too.
The more useful line for planning work comes at the end of the forecast. Conditions are expected to turn colder and more settled late in the week and for next weekend.
So the sequence is rough, then workable. Wet and windy from Wednesday through Thursday morning, unsettled and showery either side of it, then a colder, more settled spell as the weekend arrives.
What should farmers watch?
Two windows matter. The first is Wednesday's 12-hour wind warning in Donegal, Galway and Mayo, where displaced objects and fallen branches are the likeliest headaches. The second is the overnight rain into Thursday across all seven counties, where localised flooding is a named risk — low-lying fields, laneways and yards with poor drainage come first.
The silver lining is thin but real. A colder, more settled end to the week and weekend should firm things up again, assuming the rain behaves as forecast rather than as it sometimes does. Watch Met Éireann's updates before committing to fieldwork or stock movements on Thursday.
