Agronomist’s notes
- CropX acquired SCIO, marking its eighth acquisition since 2020
- SCIO brings 44 granted patents in portable near-infrared spectroscopy
- CropX has raised $64 million (€55 million) since foundation
- CropX platform operates in more than 70 countries
- Financial terms of the SCIO deal were not disclosed
CropX Technologies has acquired SCIO, a developer of portable near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy technology, in a deal that brings 44 granted patents and an enterprise software business into the digital agronomy company.
CropX did not disclose financial terms. The deal is CropX's eighth acquisition since 2020.
What does the acquisition change for users?
SCIO's handheld scanners measure crop composition without destroying the sample. Applications span seed, grain and oilseeds, feed and forage, berries and sweet corn. Readings take seconds rather than the days a wet-chemistry laboratory usually needs, and the devices connect to cloud software that turns scans into dashboards.
Until now, CropX has sold in-season agronomy: soil moisture and temperature from in-field sensors, weather overlays, satellite imagery and crop models that translate the data into irrigation, fertiliser and canopy recommendations. SCIO adds the harvest endpoint — measured protein, oil, moisture or dry matter — that agronomists typically only see weeks after delivery.
By integrating this technology, CropX aims to create a feedback loop between field management and actual harvest results. Data on crop quality and composition can then be linked with CropX data from soil sensors, weather, satellite imagery and agronomic models. According to the company, the combined dataset should sharpen future agronomic recommendations.
The practical effect: a wheat grower using CropX to schedule nitrogen splits could, at harvest, scan a grain sample with a SCIO device and compare actual protein against the model's prediction. That delta, fed back into the platform, would then recalibrate next season's nitrogen rate on the same field.
What is in the SCIO portfolio?
- 44 granted patents covering portable NIR spectroscopy hardware and software
- An enterprise SaaS business serving buyers who need rapid composition data
- Existing SCIO enterprise contracts, which CropX inherits on closing
- Calibration libraries for seed, grain, oilseeds, feed, forage, berries and sweet corn
Where does CropX stand now?
The company has raised $64 million (€55 million) since its foundation. Its digital agronomy platform operates in more than 70 countries. Earlier deals in the eight-acquisition run include the purchase of EnGeniousAg, which added nitrogen-sensing hardware to the platform.
What should farmers and enterprise users watch?
Integration timing
CropX has not published a timeline for SCIO hardware access inside the existing CropX subscription. Watch for product update notes over the next two quarters; expect API or in-app access to SCIO quality results for current CropX customers before any standalone retail push.
Pricing for new users
SCIO devices have historically sold direct to enterprises and research buyers. CropX has not indicated whether the unit will open up to grower-direct purchasing or remain a B2B channel.
Enterprise contract continuity
Existing SCIO SaaS customers should see no immediate service changes. CropX has stated it will maintain the SCIO device line and software stack.
The next milestone to watch is the first joint product announcement. Until then, the open question for growers is whether measured harvest quality, fed back into an agronomy platform, will change input decisions enough to justify the subscription cost.
