Agronomist’s notes
- The updated NG Plus unit replaces both the NG Plus 4 and NG Plus Monoshox units.
- Monocarb carbide openers last up to eight times longer than standard openers.
- NG Plus applies 150 kg of down pressure per unit versus 325 kg for the Valoterra.
- The NG Plus is 15% cheaper than the Valoterra, with 38 cm discs instead of 45 cm.
- Available on planters from four to twelve rows, with mechanical or electrical drive.
Monosem has replaced two of its planter units — the NG Plus 4 and the NG Plus Monoshox — with a single updated NG Plus unit that costs 15% less than its premium Valoterra sibling. Importer Farmstore in Haps, North Brabant, announced the update, which revises the seed metering unit, LED lighting, lids and furrow opener.
The consolidation matters for buyers speccing a new drill. Instead of choosing between two chassis, farmers now configure one unit to suit their conditions. The NG Plus runs on double disc openers and is available on planters from four to twelve rows wide.
Configuration options include:
- With or without fertilizer or microgranule application
- Fixed down-pressure springs, adjustable springs, or adjustable springs plus a shock absorber
- Mechanical or electrical drive
What has changed on the unit itself?
The seed metering unit now carries quick-release fasteners, so operators can open it without tools. Monosem rates the metering unit for maize, beans, sunflowers, sorghum, pumpkins and beets — the same broad crop coverage that has long underpinned precision planter sales in Europe.
The lids are easier to open, generate less dust, and stay firmly in the open position. The unit also gains LED lighting as standard, a practical upgrade for anyone planting into the evening or checking metering performance in poor light.
The most significant engineering change sits at the soil interface. Monosem is introducing a new generation of carbide openers under the Monocarb name. The opener forms a V-shaped seed furrow, and according to the manufacturer lasts up to eight times longer than a standard opener. For contractors and large-scale maize growers running high hectares, that wear life translates directly into fewer disc changes and less downtime at the busiest point of the season.
How does it compare with the Valoterra?
The NG Plus is, in effect, a simpler and cheaper version of the Valoterra unit Monosem launched in 2022. The differences are concrete. The Valoterra applies up to 325 kilograms of down pressure per unit; the NG Plus manages 150 kilograms. The discs are smaller too, at 38 centimeters rather than 45 centimeters.
That gap defines the market split. Heavy soils, high residue cover and minimum-tillage situations where penetration is the limiting factor justify the Valoterra's higher down pressure and larger discs. On well-structured, conventionally worked seedbeds, the NG Plus delivers the same metering versatility at a lower price per row — 15% below the Valoterra according to Farmstore's figures.
The single-unit strategy also simplifies parts stocking for dealers and contractors running mixed fleets, since one metering design now covers the volume end of the range.
What should buyers watch next?
Farmers considering a planter purchase this season should compare the 150-kilogram down-pressure ceiling of the NG Plus against their own seedbed conditions before committing, and ask dealers for pricing on the Monocarb carbide openers as an option. Availability and row-width configurations run through Farmstore in the Netherlands; first field results on Monocarb wear life under Dutch conditions will be worth tracking through the coming planting window.
