Met Éireann has issued Status Orange wind and rain warnings for five counties as Storm Boelo, the second named storm of the season, tracks towards Ireland for the October Bank Holiday weekend.
The forecaster expects spells of "very heavy and intense rain" and "severe and damaging gusts" from the system, whose name is pronounced Boo-loh. That pairing — saturated ground plus damaging winds — is the combination that brings down trees, poles and, on farms, polytunnels and temporary structures.
What warnings are in place, and when?
The warning map reads like a schedule, so here it is as one:
- Status Orange rain warning, Kerry: 7:00a.m until 2:00p.m on Saturday, October 24.
- Status Orange wind warning, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo: 2:00p.m Saturday until 9:00a.m Sunday.
- Status Yellow rain warning, Clare, Cork, Donegal, Galway, Kerry, Leitrim, Limerick, Mayo and Sligo: 4:00a.m to 3:00p.m Saturday.
- Status Yellow wind warning, Connacht, Clare, Kerry and Limerick: 1:00p.m Saturday to midday Sunday.
- Status Yellow wind warning, Donegal: 1:00p.m Saturday to 3:00p.m Sunday.
- UK Met Office Status Yellow wind warning, Northern Ireland: 6:00p.m Saturday to 3:00p.m Sunday.
The northwest bears the brunt of the wind, with an Orange-level alert running overnight into Sunday morning. Kerry takes the sharpest rain hit, though only for seven hours.
What does this change for farmers?
Practically: anything you can secure before Saturday lunchtime, secure it. Met Éireann warns of very difficult travelling conditions, disruption and delays to public transport, and outdoor events that "could be severely disrupted".
The strong gusts may result in power outages, fallen trees and damage to homes and businesses, the forecaster said. There is also a risk of localised flooding, coastal flooding and large waves — a consideration for anyone with livestock or machinery on low-lying coastal ground in the west.
For a Bank Holiday weekend, the timing is poor. Slurry spreading, harvest leftovers, roofing repairs and any outdoor work in the flagged counties now has a hard deadline of roughly Saturday morning.
Storm Austen has not finished yet
Boelo arrives before its predecessor has been cleared up. Around 3,000 homes, farms and businesses remain without power after Storm Austen tracked across Ireland overnight.
ESB Networks has deployed crews in all impacted areas to carry out restoration work where safe to do so. Note the qualifier. If Boelo arrives on schedule, some of that reconnection work may pause while the Orange alerts run.
A Status Yellow rain and wind warning for Leinster and Munster expired at 10:00a.m this morning. Met Éireann said rain in the east and north will clear eastwards this morning, followed by sunshine and scattered showers for the rest of the day — a brief, useful window for storm preparations.
What to watch next
Two storms inside a week suggests a lively start to the wind season. Farmers in the Orange counties should expect updates to warning levels as Boelo's track firms up, and those still off-grid after Austen should brace for a slower reconnection than ESB would otherwise manage. Check the Met Éireann and ESB PowerCheck services before travelling to check stock on Sunday morning.
